Just making sure I got this right......

I think for teh most part we do a fairly good job of staying within the lines. I think that there are a few majority opinions that get more lee way than others, but not a big deal. I also have a habit of just letting shit roll off my shoulders, It's an internet forum, you can't take it too serious. If someone says something that I don't like, I can choose to respond with a differing opinion which I sometimes do, or I can just ignore it. Or I suppose I can go to google and find an inappropriate picture that makes me laugh and post that.

I think Mike stepped over the line and I don't take issue with him getting a temporary ban. He and Tom had some banter back and forth over the last month or so, and I thought it was two buddies just going on. After a while it became clear that they are not buddies and actually after each other and at that point I thought it was a bit much, but let it go. It was obnoxious and uncalled for but probably only warranted a "settle down". At the point that Mike started directly or indirectly started threatening people, repeatedly, that was out of line and a ban works just fine.

Mike sees it as "speaking his mind" but I also have to assume that to some degree he knows he was wrong for making those statements, but just doesn't care.

I'm pretty Ok with most any posts or whatever being said until it turns to a personal fight. I don't have to agree with everything I read. I can just move on.

Agreed,Chris.....when stuff gets personal, it's time to chill.

And, I whole heartedly agree with Oli.......I just didn't want to be directly associated with the post :smilelol:eek: :bolt::eddie2:

Mike made his bed, and he is facing the consequences of his actions. I'm not in any way defending what he said, or the mannerism in which he expressed himself.....and he'll be the first one to tell you I said as such during our conversations.

That doesn't change the underlying context of my question......what is deemed acceptable decorm on the ACE board ? Is inflammatory commentary, disguised as humor, acceptable ? I can make jokes all day long about race, religion, gender, policitcs, that many may find humorous ........but I'm sure we can agree that it most certainly can be taken as inflammatory to some as well, right ?

Who makes that distinction ?

I try to be reasonable. We have guidelines in ACE. The fact is, in some cases, it depends what is acceptable or not. I have a job where they pay me to be a reasonable person. I talk to people, I look at evidence and I try to be impartial. People will tell you things from their perspective, which is often a byproduct of their life experiences and world views. I have to filter that through my own life experiences and world views.

Additionally, words written in cyberspace leave an additional factor of uncertainty in deciding not only what someone means, but also the true context of someone's words. Usually, things will be taken three different ways by three different people.

So, we all have to evaluate what is reasonable. Well over 99% of what goes on here is reasonable. We generally get along and heated discussion is funnelled constructively. What do we do if it's not? Do we censor? Close it but let it be viewable?

It depends.

It depends on what I and the other moderators feel is reasonable. I don't want to make every decision on my own. The fact is, I don't get paid and spend a lot of my time with this stuff. I could easily throw my hands in the air, log off and live very well with my family. I have done my best to choose Moderators who are different, so I can hear opinions which are not my own. This gives a well rounded basis for decision making. I spend a lot of time on decisions and don't take them lightly.

But, I choose to spend time getting to know you all well enough to try to know what you mean behind these words.

No, somthing which is truly inflammatory really doesn't belong on ACE. So, who decides what is TRULY inflammatory? It depends on the subject, who said it, who it is towards, and many other factors. Some people have "thicker skins" than others. Should we cater to a new member who doesn't like pictures of the middle finger? No, not really reasonable. Should we at least listen to her complaint and consider how she feels? Sure. But that doesn't dictate we change for that one person.

If I felt something were truly inflammatory to the point it was dangerous or damaging, I'd take it down. In the latest case, things were said not only on the Forum, but also in private messages that I felt were very much a threat to a "reasonable person" in my belief. That belief was also shared by others. I made a decision based upon my beliefs to suspend a long standing member. During that suspension, I tried to reach out to come to an understanding which was met with a rebuke. I felt as though I was at an impasse with no likelihood of a peaceful resolution. All the Moderators and Admins had the chance to provide input and I listened. I then decided, based upon the entire circumstances, that I must permanently ban that individual from ACE. I also considered the past events in my decision. There were chances offered in the past and warnings issued. Then, this individual threatens to sue for Slander and Libel. After consulting with some sources of mine, there is no threat of lawsuit against any of us for what has thus far been posted on ACE.

So, let's ask the direct question. Is it OK to put satire on ACE at the expense of any person? It depends. I do my best to read every single post on here every day. I have not personally not seen anything which I feel is harmful or monetarily damaging to anyone's reputation.

I will always accept questions in person or by PM if any of you think something on ACE is out of line.

Thank you,

Ted

Excellent reply, Constable Yoder :clap

Kissing ass will get you pretty far, sir.

Seriously, I just want everyone to know just how much thought and effort goes into everything around here. Even deciding where we will eat!

And I haven't removed Oli's post because, at face value, it offends everyone on Earth to some level. But it also is satire. He's trying to make a point and if you look past just the words and try to see his true meaning, it's not offensive. Not to THIS cracker, anyway.

As I had mentioned, both in voice calls, text, PM's e-mail , and personal face to face time..... I've never seen/participated in something like this. A true WTFIGO situation for me :banghead

This is totally a FWIW post as it seems that everything has pretty much drawn to an end here but I keep a bucket full of pennies by my computer at all times so I can throw in my two cents worth. I am a 10 year veteran of a raucous street racing site back in KC. For the first part of its life it was mainly early 20s people and the content showed it. There was CONSTANT bickering, it was not at all uncommon to have someone show their disapproval of your thread by posting hardcore gay pornography, etc. In short, this was not in any way, shape or form a stuffy, over sensitive forum. Think 4chan.org with an automotive theme, lol. Now, with that said, any kind of threat was taken pretty damn seriously. Any threat that involved something more than just "kicking your ass" (ESPECIALLY if it involved taking you and your car out) was pretty much a one way street to a permanent ban. Now, I'm, the first to admit that I (likely) don't know a fraction of the real/complete story and I'm not saying it's right, wrong or otherwise. I am saying that based upon my experience with situations very similar, from what I've seen, "management" at ACE has handled this in a pretty standard way, if not leaning towards being a lot more understanding than I would've guessed.

I think the answer is what expense? And the expense will be drawn by person, and event. We all make fun of you for the Duncan thing, everyone made fun of me for the sale of a car for no money, Cahd can't spell siht... And all that is at someone's expense, but we are Ok with it and it's really no big deal.

We also still poke fun at Tom from Yuma (who no longer associates with ACE because of it) for the burnout-turned-crash at the BBQ a few years ago. He was genuinely upset about it, and it really hurt his feelings. I for one backed off that deal because he was so upset about it, and really, it was a big deal. He could have been fairly seriously hurt in that deal had the car rotated a bit more to the right. So for him the expense was too great.

I think you have to have a bit of common sense and understanding to know what can be funny and what should be left alone, and sometimes someone either goes too far with the satire, or the person it's about takes it too seriously. In either of those cases, adjustments should be made at that time to soften the blow as we don't really want to hurt people over it. but for teh most part, I think we all "get it", and I haven't seen it being a problem.

For me personally, I think satire is best left to the "basement", or boards who cater to that type of material, and not left out for consumption for the general populace on a car centric board. As I think I am understanding the ACE bylaws as they stand now, the content and the "target" of any "satire" is acceptable.....at the descretion of the moderators.....as long as it doesn't touch politics and religion ? And, moderators are human beings, just like everyone else......if they have strong feelings in, say..there religious beliefs, I would think that there acceptance of such satire would be rather low....especially if they are the target of such content. Oli's example is perfect (though exagerated to drive home a point) .....and I agree with Marco, that it took a conversation amongst a few people before it was deemed "acceptable" in the context of the conversation.

I was always wondering about that one, given that some "seductive" avatar's were politely asked to be removed......I assumed due to the P.G nature of the board.

Once upon a time we had a welcome thread for every new member.

For some reason everyone got excited and put "seductive" avatars in place.

So every welcome thread looked like a bad porn show with members saying hi.

After a couple of complaints the membership was politely asked to rethink thier avatar choices.

Which of course ruffled a few feathers.....

Tom's was the cartoon Chevy emblem girl bouncing, umm the emblem!

The worst was the G-string colored girl on the back of a motocycle,,, yeah you know the one!

Nope......the texting is ongoing (other than Mr. Steg). I was hoping they would share more with the general ACE population, but understand their points on continued anonymity on the subject matter.

It is what it is.
