LE MANS: LM24 Entry List Released

List of 56 invites, including GreenGT H2, revealed for 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans...

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest announced Friday its entry selection for the 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans, set for June 22-23.

Featuring 56 participants, including the new GreenGT H2, which will run unclassified, this year's twice-around-the-clock endurance classic will again see a two-way fight between Audi and Toyota for overall honors.

Three Audi R18 e-tron quattros will do battle against two Toyota TS030 Hybrids, with additional LMP1 entries from Rebellion Racing (Lola B12/60 Toyota) and Strakka Racing (HPD ARX-03c). The class features a total of eight cars, a significant drop from recent years.

READ: 32 Entries for WEC Season

Helping make up for the depleted LMP1 numbers is an expanded grid in LMP2, with an impressive 22-car field set to take on the twice-around-the-clock endurance classic.

Notable entries in the cost-capped prototype ranks include defending class winners Starworks Motorsport (HPD ARX-03b), a stout three-car entry by OAK Racing (Morgan-Nissan), as well as 2012 ALMS P2 champions Level 5 Motorsports, which has confirmed its automatic invitation.

After a decade-long absence, the iconic Viper brand will return to Le Mans, with SRT Motorsports fielding a pair of factory Viper GTS-Rs in GTE-Pro. They'll be joined by fellow American factory outfit Corvette Racing, along with FIA WEC season-long factory entries from Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari in the strong 11-car field.

Fourteen cars make up the GTE-Am category, including a much-anticipated entry from Dempsey Racing-Proton, which will field an ex-Felbermayr-Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for Patrick Dempsey, Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti. The other big ALMS name comes from Extreme Speed Motorsports, which has accepted its auto-invite and will field a Ferrari F458 Italia with nominated driver Scott Sharp.

Other American interests in GTE-Am include Krohn Racing and the newly formed 8Star Motorsports team. Both teams will run Ferrari F458 Italias and are also entered in the full eight-round FIA WEC season.

There a total of ten reserves, six for LMPs and four GTEs, including the TRG-AMR North America Aston Martin Vantage V8 entry, which is fourth in the queue with team principal Kevin Buckler as the nominated driver.

ALMS: SRT Evaluating Customer Viper Program

“We’re open minded to it and it would fit like a glove for us in many ways,” Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of SRT Brand and Motorsports tells SPEED.com...

Posted Image

With its factory program set to enter its first full season of the American Le Mans Series and having gained two entries for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, SRT appears to be on the brink of expanding its Viper GTS-R program to customer entries.

Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of SRT Brand and Motorsports, confirmed to SPEED.com that talks are underway, which could see the Riley-built Vipers be offered to privateer teams in the various ACO-blessed championships worldwide.

“We’re actually getting a lot of interest from private owners about that,” Gilles said. “We’re... looking at it. We know how to do it, let’s just be honest with you. The car is just a hair’s breath away from being able [to]. It’s just a matter of priorities right now. Our priorities have to be focused. Our team is very small. We don’t want them subdivided at this moment in time.”

If SRT pulls the trigger on customer sales, it would be nothing new for the American manufacturer. More than 30 of the previous-generation Viper GTS-Rs were sold through its former partner ORECA, which built up a considerable customer base with the championship-winning GTS-class machines.

While Gilles said that a factory program in the FIA World Endurance Championship is not currently in the cards, he wouldn’t rule out supporting customer Viper programs in other championships, in order to grow the brand’s international presence.

“We’re actually going to use these next four events leading to Le Mans to measure that exact question,” Gilles said. “There are a lot of aspiring racers and private racers [that] go to the events that we’ll be at and we’ll have those discussions and see what the market can bare.

“We have some connections in Europe and Japan and all over the world that have already been talking about, ‘Hey, are you going to go GT3 racing’ and that type of thing. We’re open minded to it and it would fit like a glove for us in many ways.”

ALMS: BMW Launches Z4 GTE

New GT3-based contender set for debut in next month’s Twelve Hours of Sebring...

Posted Image

After months of anticipation, BMW took the wraps off its newest GT contender Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway, unveiling the new Z4 GTE that will compete in this year’s American Le Mans Series season.

The GT3-based car, built and developed in cooperation with BMW Team RLL, replaces the ALMS championship-winning M3 GT model, which scored back-to-back class titles and seven victories over its four-year life in the highly competitive production-based ranks.

While similar in appearance to the BMW Z4 GT3, the new GTE model, powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine, features considerable changes in order for it to fit within the ACO’s regulations.

"The GT3 car is based on the FIA regulations and the GTE/ALMS is based on ACO regulations, so we had to make some modifications to the car," said BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt. "The systems that are running in the car are also slightly different. In GT3, you're allowed systems like ABS or DSC but you're not allowed to run that in the ALMS.

Posted Image

"Aerodynamics are slightly different. There is a lot more freedom in GT3 with aerodynamics and it's a lot more restricted in GTE. We had to really develop the car as a GTE car. I think we're well prepared but we'll know when the car hits the track."

Posted Image

Along with Tuesday’s unveil, BMW Team RLL also confirmed the driver pairings and new tire partner for the team’s two-car ALMS attack.

BMW veteran Bill Auberlen will team with newcomer Maxime Martin in the No. 55 entry, while 2011 ALMS GT class co-champions Dirk Mueller and Joey Hand will pilot the No. 56 BMW Z4 GTE, with rising star John Edwards filling in for Hand while the American is on DTM duty in Europe.

Additionally, the new Z4 GTE will be on Michelin tires, rekindling a partnership last seen in the ALMS in 2001 with the venerable M3 GTRs.

Posted Image

While having already completed an initial test at Monteblanco in Spain, the Z4 GTE will make it’s official on-track debut on Feb. 21 at Sebring International Raceway, as part of a two-day test which will also include a planned 12-hour simulation run for the new beast.

"I think it's fair to say that we look at this new car with a lot of optimism,” said BMW Team RLL team principal Bobby Rahal. “There's going to be ups and downs, there always is with a new car. Luckily it's based somewhat on the GT3 version, so it's not like a total unknown.

“But I also respect the competition we face in the GTE category of the ALMS. It's tough out there. We have to have our 'A' game every day. I can assure everyone that we're going to give this partnership 100 percent."

"It's always difficult to say in the first year where you stand,” Marquardt said. “We'll obviously see in a few weeks at Sebring but I think looking at how the Z4 was in the GT3 category, I'm quite sure it will get close to that level quite soon in the GTE version of the car as well.

“We'll have to work with the ACO together, obviously. But I think together with Michelin, our tire partner, Bobby and his guys will be very quickly up to the performance level of the M3, and we'll see where it goes. This year will obviously be a development year but towards the end of the year we will be very close again."

:partygrnhat: I also read the 458's get new aero this year as well, they were wearing a funky split-splitter and new 'canards' at teh Sebring test.

I think teh Ferraris were plenty strong last year, they just didn't get some of teh luck breaks that CR did. Teh Z4 does look a lot better than teh M3 school bus, but that wing looks suspiciously high.... :huh Jamie Howe got to ride around in one today...if I was Bryan Sellers, I'd beat her butt, and send her to teh kitchen to make me a sammich....:toetap BTW: It really sucks having to listen to Joey Handjob again this season....:cuss

BREAKING: Porsche 991 GTE Breaks Cover

FIRST PHOTOS: New Porsche 991 testing at Sebring International Raceway...

Porsche’s new 991-based GTE contender broke cover today at Sebring as it prepares for the start of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

SPEED.com has obtained the first photos of the new 911 RSR model, which is testing alongside a group of cars from the American Le Mans Series on the famed airfield circuit.

Reports indicate the new-generation 991 turned its first laps shortly after 9 a.m. ET, making short five-lap stints with lap times in the 2:05 range. The pace picked up in the afternoon, which saw both factory drivers Patrick Pilet and Richard Lietz take turns in the car today.

The German manufacturer elected to take part in a single-day test at Sebring in order to evaluate the durability of the new car ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it will return with a factory effort for the first time since 1998.

"We are very pleased with how the testing has gone so far," said Porsche's Head of Motorsport Hartmut Kristen. "Our goal is to be well prepared for the challenges of the very strong GTE class in the WEC and at Le Mans. The circuit in Sebring is very well suited to put a new vehicle through some demanding trials.

"For this reason, a test in Sebring is a very good rehearsal for one of the toughest races of all, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Until the season kicks off in Silverstone, we will conduct some final tests on other race tracks so that our new 911 RSR is well and truly ready for the World Endurance Championship season."

There are currently no plans to race the car full-time in America until 2014. Porsche AG Team Manthey will campaign two of the new 911 RSR's in the FIA WEC this year as a development program.

Pilet will be joined by former ALMS champion Joerg Bergmeister in the No. 91 entry, while Lietz and longtime co-driver Marc Lieb are slated to pilot the No. 92 car in the full eight-round global championship. They'll be reinforced by Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas for Le Mans.

Aston Martin Racing to enter two cars at ALMS opener at Sebring

Posted Image

Aston Martin Racing will have two factory Aston Martin Vantage GTE entries on the grid for the 61st Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. After a preseason test session at Portimão in Portugal, AMR will test both cars at Road Atlanta before heading to south to Sebring for the opening round of the American Le Mans Series on Saturday, March 16.

Darren Turner, Stefan Mücke and Bruno Senna will drive the No. 97 Aston Martin at Sebring, and Canadian Paul Dalla Lana, American Billy Johnson and ex-AMR factory driver Pedro Lamy will drive the No. 007 at Sebring. Dane Cameron, another of America's young road-racing talents, will test with the team at Atlanta.

“Although this isn't the first time we have run the new Vantage GTE, it's the first time we've been able to run it in anger and put some serious mileage on the car,” Turner said of the test in Portugal. 'It does feel like a very good step forward. The team has done a great job over the winter and made some significant improvements. For me personally, it was probably as exciting to drive for the first time as the first drive of the DBR9. I have a really good feeling about the car and I'm looking forward to the next test in Atlanta in a few weeks time.”

Hello....Mücke. :howdy

That's an old FIA GT1 reference for you noobs.

Lamy used to be wicked fast in the old Prodrive Astons, but having a Canadian with a silly name handicaps teh effort, eh?
