Grayeagle Posted April 21, 2007 Share Posted April 21, 2007 SUNDAY APRIL 29th 1pmPM A or M for directionsCouple folks have expressed interest in watchin the video of my flight in Crazy Horse ..a TF-51D Mustang.Need someone with a large screen + VHS + room for a small party to host ..mebbe a couple hours on a weekend afternoon? BBQ, a bit of tinkerin here an there, swappin ideas, an stuff like that there?Thing is .. Lee and his pals are certified instructors in type .. means that you dont need a license to go up with them, and they *will* let you fly the beast to your limit of comfort.I was comfortable to the point he let me do the complete aerobatic certification routine, he even let me land that beautiful beast .. I begged off taxiing back to the hangar an let him do that .. I was *tired* .. felt like I had worked out in a gym Coupla notes:I had read that for every 'G' you pull in a Mustang past straight an level flight, you gotta put 50lbs of force on the 'stick' .. true. It took all I had to get 4G into it = 150 pounds of pull (you fly straight an level at 1 'G').. I braced both feet and used both hands for the pull out from loops, ..for the split S .. I held the stick in one hand and cranked elevator trim with the other ..there is *no* other way you will pull out of a power on dive We came out the bottom of the split S at 400mph or so.. entered at 260 or so.In one sequence we were crankin around hard, then dropped 10 degree of flaps ('combat flaps') and tightened the turn up as hard as I could pull, then raised the flaps and the aircraft departed = fell outta the sky You can watch the nose track around, and *see* just how fast a Mustang can turn. It doesn't just whip around! Takes *awhile* to crank around 90 degrees at 250 indicated .. right in the sweet spot for air combat.When she departs .. all you get is a little stick shake and then she's gone. Right Rudder.. a LOT of it.. right NOW .. and she comes back. It gets *real* interesting when yer hard left turning and she breaks loose .. you go inverted and the nose drops a LOT .. you lose 150 feet in an eyeblink.I could see where that would be a bad day if you were low in the pattern or crankin it over the tree tops tryin to put your nose ahead of a pesky 109 to get a shot.The sound of that Merlin up front is quieter than most of my project cars have been ..it *does* sound *good* though!! The video does not do it justice at all.Yes .. we entered the pattern at 250 indicated, did an overhead break at half field .. and I promply lost sight of the field being busy with trim, flaps, gear, .. by the time I got her all dialed in for downwind I could not find the field for my life .. We're thinking say 1 or so, unless ya'll would prefer an earlier showing than the matinee. Just give us the say so and we'll put it on the calendar. A thought just occured to Melissa, anyone who wants to come over should bring something that they would like to send to Dewey. Magazines, nothing pornographic though. Sorry Dewey....... What else, sun block, Tooth paste and tooth brushes, snack type foods like Eddie said, maybe one or two disposable cameras. If someone can get the CF banner for him that would be great. I don't know if we can get it by this Sunday but I won't ship until the following week anyways.Dewey,Add what ever you think you might need here and we will take care of it. Except the Vette and the dancers...... :D Phil, Can you please bring an ACE t-shirt or two. I will take care of the tab if need be.Now the reason I am saying this, is because since we are going to have the video party at our house then lets get all the stuff together while we are, well, together..........Bring what you can.
