Mark321
The crazy thing is that I called a service writer today and all she could tell was that something was done on 7-12-05 and if I brought it in GM might pay for a new fix. What I really want is to get that crap out of my car and install the simulator that will arrive at my front door Friday.I'll scrub the information as much as possible tomorrow and see what I can. This is a copy of the information I got when I bought the car.http://www.azclubgp.com/pdxgtp/PDXGTP/Corv...uHT-records.docIt calles out some harness kit so lik I said, I'll figure it out asap. Thanks again, I appreciate your help.. If the bundle is Orange/Purple/Green/Black then unplug the ECL and plug in the CLB relay. Pull fuse #25 for 1 minute to clear the BCM computer. Clear the codes out of you Vette from the DIC (Driver Info Center). If there is a white wire, insted of black wire, it gets a little more complicated... Let me know. MY76LT4
Here is a summary of the recall for future reference. Big difference in the fix and the results between automatics and 6 speeds.Make / Models : Model/Build Years: CHEVROLET / CORVETTE 1997-2004 Type: ANY Recall Number: 04V060000 Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEMS (ECL), WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO LOCK, THE ECL SYSTEM PREVENTS TURNING OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE ECL UNLOCKS THE STEERING SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED SO THAT IF THE COLUMN FAILS TO UNLOCK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND THE CUSTOMER TRIES TO DRIVE, THE FUEL SUPPLY WILL BE SHUT OFF SO THAT THE VEHICLE CANNOT MOVE WHEN THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STEERED. IF VOLTAGE AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS LOW OR INTERRUPTED, HOWEVER, THE FUEL SHUT OFF MAY NOT OCCUR AND THE VEHICLE CAN BE ACCELERATED WHILE THE STEERING SYSTEM IS LOCKED. ALSO WHEN THE CONTROL SYSTEM SHOWS THAT THE ECL IS UNLOCKED AND THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, THE LOCK PIN LOCATION CAN VARY. DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION OF THE LOCK PLATE RELATIVE TO THE SWITCH TRANSITION POINT, THERE COULD THEN BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE LOCK PLATE AND PIN CAUSING THE STEERING TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING . Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING. Remedy: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL DISABLE THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK BY REMOVING THE COLUMN LOCK PLATE. WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WILL LOCK BUT THE STEERING COLUMN WILL NOT LOCK. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL REPROGRAM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, PERFORM A DIMENSIONAL CHECK OF THE COLUMN LOCK AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE LOCK PLATE. THE STEERING COLUMN ON THESE VEHICLES WILL CONTINUE TO LOCK WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED. OWNER NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS OF 1997 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS BEGAN ON APRIL 26, 2004. OWNERS OF 1998 THROUGH 2004 VEHICLES (EXCEPT 1997-1998 MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES) WILL BE NOTIFIED BEGINNING ON AUGUST 2, 2004. THE REMAINING OWNERS (1997-1998 MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES) WILL BE NOTIFIED LATER IN 2004, WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438. Notes: GM RECALL NO. 04006. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATIONS AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Guest Sidewinder
I tried removing the rod from the lock but the car knows it is not there and still shut the car off. Getting to the lock is very easy with minor disassembly of the steering column cover.
Phoenix FRC
Ok,The CLB I bought from the Houston Corvette store noted in page one of this post arrived Friday.I spent hours reading thru the post on CF and wow... that guy Jhon "Cscokd" rocks because he has really taken on the fix for the greater good of all C5 owners.. Anyway,I called Chevrolet and it wasen't easy but I got tons of information from them but bsically I was put on notice by GM that I would pay for all the labor and they would pay for the parts. This morning I went into the garage with my laptop so I could read thru the post on CF and proceeded to disable the K-harness, add the jump wire (which I took a photo of) and sucessfully installed the CLB.Its all together now and better then it was before because now the steering wheel can't lock. Thanks for all the help, if & when someone else in ACE has this problem, because I'm now an expert... I''ll be happy to help. Later,

Phoenix FRC
Yeah, at the moment you realize the steering can lock at any moment and your helpless... that's when you get scared that you might crash someone else and be responsible.. forget-it....Now I want all the people that have the recall installed to think about it and make a decision to get that crap out of there and make that car safe.I just don't get why GM couldn't get this issue fixed. I just cant believe GM fumbles fix-after-fix on the Column Lock ...I wish they would buy the rights to the CLB and issue their final fix once and for all Glad your back up and running Tom Just keep an eye on the Diff now
MOTV8
Glad your back up and running Tom Just keep an eye on the Diff now Glad to hear your column-lock 'experience' ended so well, could have been much worse... As for the diff seal, I've had mine 'repaired' twice, but another time I found some gear oil on the garage floor they told me it was just some "vent"on the diff that was the culprit. So far, so good, no more gear oil....but there will most likely be more issues you'll run into eventually...headlight motors, window regulators, the dreaded seat rocking, power door-locks, etc... Phoenix FRC
Leaky diff huh? is that a good time to make some sort of upgrade? I'm all about making the right upgrades if money has to be spent anyway..I think my drivers seat is rocking a little right now but it hasen't gotten on my nerves yet. I might not have noticed but... you guys brought it up. The window motor regulators, that's a regular PITA with Pontiac too.Normally I would just get a new one at Chapman with my GMS price but that price for the passenger front just took a massive price increase to $212.00 at the GMS price and $340.00 normal dealer price.. I was like WTF.. So... I figured I'd take a $50.00 gamble and I bought one on Ebay advertised as new in box, motor and regulator so I did it, I paid my $50.00 and bought it from AEM, they sell tons of GM stuff on Ebay.Anyway... about a week after I paid the money it arrived, ceck out the pics of the old & new.http://www.azclubgp.com/pdxgtp/PDXGTP/Engi...ld/DSC01307.JPGhttp://www.azclubgp.com/pdxgtp/PDXGTP/Engi...ld/DSC01309.JPGThis was a damn sweet deal for $50.00.I installed it in 45 minutes and it works perfectly.I took photos to note to anyone that might ask about the quality.IMHO they are better then the GM stock ones because they have the pulley for the cable instead of dragging the cable thru the plastic guide.I might need to make a differential thread, thinking about it, once I found a drop of gear oil on my garage floor but its clean and dry under the car and it hasen't returned. r40734
Tom, did you get the service bulletin I sent you about this the other day? The new GM "fix" as of the last couple of months is to remove the prior "fix" and disable the column system. They inform the owner that the column will no longer lock... ever. Also, from my repo days, enough force on the steering wheel will render that damn thing inop forever. That's my "Free Mod" tip of the day!
Phoenix FRC
I figured I might follow up on this last post.Kipp & I work for the same company so maybe I don't see him but we exchange email.I did have the last recall and IMHO, that's why I was stranded.I'm glad to have that drap out of my car now.
