SALT LAKE CITY - Two Utah men are accused of trying to illegally export surplus pieces of F-14 fighter jets, a plane that is flown only in Iran.

Abraham Trujillo, 61, and David Waye, 22, both of Ogden, are alleged to have tried exporting the parts to Canada, but the charges don't specify how they supposedly got the parts and don't list all buyers.

Federal agents placed online orders, then intercepted the goods before they made it out of the country, the charges said.

Trujillo and Waye were charged Friday with three counts each of attempting to export a defense article without a license. Telephone listings could not be found for the men.

Iran, trying to maintain its F-14s, is aggressively seeking components from the retired U.S. Tomcat fleet. Members of Congress have expressed concerns about the Department of Defense selling surplus F-14 parts because they're worried they could wind up in Iranian aircraft.

The U.S. sold the F-14 to Iran in the 1970s when it was under the rule of the Western-friendly shah. In 1979, the shah was deposed, and the U.S. eventually banned the sale of military equipment to Iran.

The U.S. attorney's office says federal immigration agents discovered a Web site with listings of F-14 parts offered by Trujillo and his Ogden business, NSN Specialists. Over several months in 2006 and 2007, agents bought cable assemblies and other F-14 and F-4 jet items from Trujillo.

The men will receive a summons to appear before a federal magistrate. Penalties can carry 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine per count.

I'm sure some of you can enlighten me but WTF is the US selling spare F14 parts for anyway? What use would they have other than for someone who owns an F14?

Seems like an easy case to prove. You order parts, watch as the sellers put them into crates for shipping and jump them. Who besides Iran could have wanted these parts?

How could an American do this sort of thing knowing Iran could be our next combat zone? Treason plain and simple! I say :hunter the bastards!

Iran havin F14's is like the French having accordians.

So what?

-evil grin-

Just missile bait for some young Captain in his F-15 :)

If they even get 'em off the ground, and if they dont fly 'em off to another country, if a 'war' starts over there.

Selling F-14 parts through a website was pretty sneaky, I'm surprised they were caught.... :lol

Ed,

I don't believe the US as in 'US military', is selling the parts.

This stuff could be NOS some company threw away and an ahole with the knowledge of the parts use, scarfed it up for the black market!

It's always about $$.........

I could probably come up with some ideas on how to 'fix' those two!!

However, we have people who still want to reform those that willingly put our young military men and women in harm's way!!

Imagine if the sides were reversed!!

Those two would be in the town square on Friday, and you could watch them be decapitated!! :partydance:

So now they get 'three hot's and a cot' on our dime??

Ken,

I hope it wasn't the government selling this stuff but I can tell you from personal experience that I was on a government surplus equipment auction list and it would amaze you what they do sell. Even if it wasn't the government selling this stuff, the stuff was produced for the government we should control how it's disposed of. Just because some outfit is given a government contract they should be able to produce as much as they want and sell the leftovers. If we order x number of widgits for an F14 we should use that many or destroy what's left.

Not to be a prick ED,

BUT, every part on every airplane is not model specific!

Since they weren't specific about the parts or their function??

Is this news media drama or a real problem??

If it was a bullshit part, but brings the focus on a problem, Great!!

I'd still like to kick their asses because of the motivation for them $$$$$$

Doesn't matter anyway. Those old dinosaurs would not stand a chance against F-16's, 15's, or 18's and then there is always the F-22. It can shoot down 6 A/C with one salvo of AIM-120's.

They just need to pack it in. :lol

Hill AFB is where some guys actually got an engine out the back gate one time.

Yes, stealing a jet engine....but they were caught as well.

For some, money is the only reason for existence.

Would be kinda silly if it was all about some braided steel hose assemblies.

I know for a fact that a wharehouse full of gov't built 6-71 blowers was 'disposed of'

back in the day by giving them to an engine builder in SoCal and it made him and his shop

..er .. 'famous' ..

-Frank (I seem to remember it's what got Mr. Black into the blower motor bidness)
