MOTV8
Any youze C5ers do a tunnel plate mod? I did the sub-frame connectors on my old F-body with good results, and I'm thinking this tunnel plate would also be a similar good mod while the headers and t.c. go in. Anyway, I found this one at LG: Linkski and this one comes with the CF discount: Linkski #2 Anything to help stiffen up the 'vert, right?
Togo
if you are redoing the exhaust then yeah, it's a good idea, if you aren't redoing the exhaust, i think it could be an expensive predicament.Any youze C5ers do a tunnel plate mod? Desertdawg
I would be really intrested to know if it is worth it, does it make that much difference in body stiffness, or interior temps???
MOTV8
I would be really intrested to know if it is worth it, does it make that much difference in body stiffness, or interior temps???I've got my for the added stiffness, no Viagra jokes , but the vendor in the second link I posted above did post some temp data on CF: HERE I figure its a pretty good mod to do at the same time as the headers, etc...and pretty cheap too, ...I've seen those heat "blankets" for over $300 , and how much stiffness can they add??? I have never hear or read a bad comment on the plates!!As stated, Not a mod to do alone, but if you are already opened up, GO For It!!This car is pretty stiff already, but I hear the header people can tell the diff in temp right away!I can testify that you don't want to sit and BS with someone while at idle with headers and hi-flows unless you are in <40 degree weather. You will toast your right leg!!Ken
Guest Ricmin
I have done it. I made my own out of 1/4" 6061 if I remember right.I made mine a little longer than the stock close out panel. As far as chassis deflection, Yes, it did make a difference. It was noticeable as soon as I backed out of the driveway. Because of a curb at the end of my driveway, I have to come off it at an angle. The car used to moan a little and scrape the spoiler. It doesn't moan at all now and just barely scape's the spoiler. It also helps with the roof shudder on washboard type rough roads. It is definitely an improvement. As far as heat issue in the cabin, I never have had cabin heat issues.I do have a Cam, Headers.

Guest Chad@AZPS
The tunnel shield is a good thing. It does help with tieing the two sides of the car together. The shield also helps to lower interior heat, as the cats are right next to your legs. LG Motorsports also offer a tunnel insulator that blocks heat to the sides of the shield. Desertdawg
I'll let you know if I need it for some measurements, I just need to know how big of a piece of aluminum I would need to get?It might be cheaper to just buy one, but it's worth a check to see if I can make one... MOTV8
I don't know how handy you guys really are, but if you can source 3/16ths(or greater) thick 6061 aluminum, then laser cut it to shape, and perfectly drill 36 holes in it.....all for less than $129, then you've got my respect and admiration. Mine gets here Tuesday. Goes in Friday!
Desertdawg
I think I may have to go with what Dean just said, even at the normal price of $149.00 I don't think I can make it worth while.... Anyone price a sheet of 1/4 inch aluminum lately????

Mine gets here Tuesday. Goes in Friday! $129.00 is a great deal. Excellent actually considering the cost of raw materials these days. If you have access to a plasma cutter, it is a 2 minute job. Just use the stock close out for your pattern and guide. I am sure if you have the patients, a jig saw would suffice too. The 6061 is a tough material. As for the perfectly drilled holes. You will find that the bosses are not going to be perfectly aligned to the holes in the plate. The holes in the plate will be larger to compensate for "Production tolerance variance" of the vehicles. Hence the reason for some of the oblong holes in the stock plate. What I did was to outline the bolt heads with a marker to the stock plate before removing it. Then using a transfer punch, you can closely transfer the bolt locations on YOUR car to the new plate before drilling and go to a smaller than stock through hole.I don't see shear forces being an issue with the design of the plate. It would appear to me the plate provides additional torsional rigidity to the chassis.I do know that I tried to twist the 1/4" plate I fabricated by hand and it was impossible act. The stock plate is no contest. :D

I was thinkin' (it happens ) that if any of you with the capability and resources want to make your own, I could just trace mine as a template and you could cut it out of whatever you got. It looks way cooler than the stocker.

Togo
that sounds like a good idea to me! if you kept the box it came in, i'll bet you could make a decent "lifesize" template that would store easily behind any door in your house!if you do decide to make that template, keep us informed - i may be interested - as i'm sure having someone cut me one might help offset some of the cost i would incur by dropping my exhaust for the install!Got my plate today! I figured nobody wanted a "template" and went ahead and installed it. My mods are done, finito. And, no, I don't have the stock one anymore either. Sorry! Now I feel bad. Feel free to curse my ancestors for breeding such impatience into me....
