A friend of mine from way back is in the national guard. He and his bunch have been furloughed. For those of you that don't know, guard units down seriously hurts the readiness of US forces.

I'm sure I won't hear any F16s today... :o(

I have several friends at Ellsworth AFB (Rapid City) and none of the B1's are flying and they furloughed something like 400 people today... that's a lot for a town of 70,000.

Wife is furloughed. No work, no pay until it starts back. Very real effect on me and my family. There goes any plans or spending. Basically we can't do anything until she gets back to work but stay home and pay bills.

It is very likely when the children in Washington are done playing games that she will receive back pay. I wouldn't sweat it too much just yet.

im with dave on this one.

it costs more money to 'tweak' the system to remove pay than it is just to pay it.

I disagree. She has to fill out a time card every pay period. They are already filled out saying furloughed and it would require going back and submitted new time cards. Easier to just let it go and pay people based on the time cards then go back and redo all the time keeping to pay people.

I have to agree with Nick, the first thing big business or gooberment knows is how to with-hold money... Then you have to fight tooth and nail to get it out of them...

I'm sure it's as simple as mgmnt handing timekeeping a list.

timekeeper goes down the list on a screen

click, click, click -fur-lowed....next! (spelled wrong cause it's teh gooberment)

So everyone who is not working for the government, but getting some kind of assistance, such as unemployment, will continue to get theirs, but the workers are the subject of more scare tactics as to not getting paid, just like they used social security scare tactic last time. Give me a break.

As a supervisor for the govment, I did my employees' time cards. All it takes is for a click for the reason, and hit enter. Da system will take it away, no problem.

Fixing it is a little more time consuming, cause there may be people on leave, out sick, etc.

Write your representatives and let them know you think they should be the first to suffer, and excepting themselves is not acceptable.

Rant off.

Just FYI, the bills that the Republican House has sent to the Senate have all included an amendment that requires the POTUS, VP, all of Congress and executive aides to be insured through the Obamacare provisions. That could be the reason Democrats fear it and vote no.

It should also un-exempt all of Nancy Pelosi's district from Obamacare, along with the others that were given to get votes.

I ran across this about the shut-down on MSN front page

.

The law is the Antideficiency Act, passed by Congress in 1870 (and amended several times), which prohibits the government from incurring any monetary obligation for which Congress has not appropriated funds. Thank you Abe.

The only exemptions to the shutdown concern "emergencies involving the safety of human life or the protection of property," according to government documents. That has meant airports and the Postal Service are open, Social Security checks get paid and federal prisons and courts will operate as normal as do most national security functions including the military and the Central Intelligence Agency. But national parks and museums are closed along with big parts of the departments of Education and Commerce.

The latest news stated that the economic loss for the 800,000 furloughed workers amounts to $3 billion per day. The simple math calculates that to be $3750 per worker per day. It's no damn wonder the gov't keeps raising the debt limit. I'd like one of those jobs for a month or two.

Sean, FYI....

Retirees and Annuitants,

You will continue to receive your pay on time during this government shutdown.

Military retirees and annuitants are not paid from Continuing Resolution Act (CRA) appropriations. Therefore, your payments are not affected by this shutdown.

Subject: Warren Buffet says

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:

"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2013

1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the
Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into
the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.

Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their
term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

to soon ??? (( no hash tags Cahd))
