Right now I have a basic phone with Cingular and it's just ok. It places and receives calls. Period. I want to be able to do internet - email is MOST important to me with a little surfing. I'm not into porn so graphics aren't that important and I don't text or download music. Again, EMAIL is what I need most. I could go around and look and ask questions but I figure those using the service have the best advise on provider and equipment. So I'm looking for advise.

Tanks in advance! :thumbs

Hi,

You should take a look at T-Mobile I just switched over to them and I saved a bunch! they have Blackberry phones or the Sidekick that will give you the email and browsing you are looking for. right now I have 5 phones that are sharing 4000 minutes and it cost me 179.00 but for one phone they have plans ranging from 39.00 on up.

Here is the link to their plans http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/

I will say watch out for Sprint and Nextel they have a bunch of hidden charges, I found out the hard way to the tune of 1200.00 per month for 5 phones. :chris

I hope this helps you.

They all pretty much are full service anymore.

We use Alltel for a couple reasons (just phone service, we don't need all the extras.

1. In our neighborhood (between Litchfield and Dysart, just north of Bethany), they are the only ones that work

2. They have the circle where you put 10 numbers in (any numbers) and they do not use any minutes :thumbs plus you still get to keep the unlimited mobile to mobile and night/weekend

Our plan is about 900 daytime minutes, but with the circle we hardly use 200.

Hope that helps.

Steve,

We also use Alltel because of the great coverage. Robert works in some rural areas south of Chandler and Alltel covers that area without any issues. When we travel out of state, there are no roaming charges and we also have free long distance. We love the 10 "my circle" numbers that don't use any minutes from your account. Also, if you get the family plan which we have, it is free mobile to mobile.

They have a phone that uses a stylus and has microsoft windows built in. This enables you to access the internet to surf and also to access email. The phone is called UTStarcom PPC6700 and costs $249.99. Now, they have a blackberry 8703e that is only $149.99 that allows email, bluetooth and an organizer. I don't know about surfing the net though. Just visit an Alltel store or check out www.alltel.com. As usual, you need to sign a 2 year agreement with them.

We have 4 Razor phones with 700 minutes on the "national freedom" plan with platinum insurance on all 4 phones for about $130 month. We never go over our minutes because of the 10 my circles and the mobile to mobile for free feature. We have had Alltel for 7 years now and have had no complaints as of yet. What is great is Robert uses about 3000 minutes a month on his cell and it is all included in our package because he is talking mobile to mobile or using the 10 my circle numbers. It's great! :thumbs

Thanks everyone so far! This is the kind of info I'm looking for. Keep it coming. :thumbs

Chad, it's for personal use only. Cox is my ISP and I use Eudora 7 for email. I could live with outlook if I had to.

I had T Mobile for a year living in Rita Ranch it was nearly impossible to use the phone from home. I also found more than enough dead spots around Tucson.

Steve

ok Steve here is the scoop

technology

there are 2 types of internet connection with cell phones (besides Wi-Fi, but we will exclude that for now)

EDGE and EvDO

EDGE is carried by Tmobil, ATT and Cingular. its max bandwidth is 56k BPS down load. THat is Dialup speed. ok for Email but bad for Interent.

EvDO is carried by Altell, Sprint, and Verison. the down load speed is is closer to 400K. ITs cable modem speeds. great for Internet.

phones

The next choice is what style of phone you want.

certain phones are carried only by certain carriers.

Black berry phones are great. They do not use any Microsoft software. I always compare the Blackberrys as the MAC's of the phone world. There are a bit odd to use, and get a hang of. BUT THEY WORK. THe Joke around the office is my black berry comes with great games called "calculator and Phone book".

They are a no frills device, but are rock steady. great for business. No cameras, no voice dialing.

The black berry Pearl does come with a camera now.

Next time ask someone how many times there phone restarts (by the user or by itself). My Blackberry does it once a week. the 6700 is known to do it once every 3 days.

However I really enjoy the 6700 side out keyboard

audiovox6700.gif

IT is a dream to use.

I suggest getting a phone at the store and Really use it. DOnt play with it. Pick out the corvette forum and go to it.

Operating system

Blackberry= stable, and simple. "hey look I reached a high score on my 'Phone Book' game"

Microsoft= Its the big dog. lots of features, lots of games. However with complication comes problems and quirks. KISS. My next phone has a 50/50 chance of being a Microsoft.

Palm= Dead os. Avoid

Treo= Not bad, but not great. looks like Blackberry but is unstable as Microsoft

carriers tech support

Altell= not bad. They are average.

Verison= Best of the bunch, short hold times, smart techs

Sprint= Unknown

Tmobil= The worst, Long hold times STUPID techs. They are really bad

Cingular= Ive only made a few calls to them. Not bad so far but the verdict is still out.

Call plans

couldn’t tell you. I don’t pay the bills.

I do know that my Internet service EvDO (some require this for email) is $60 per month not including the 1700 minutes per month usage that I use.

I do get Tethering capability. I can use my cell phone as a "modem" to connect my Laptop to the internet. My office is my car.

Understand Steve I am a power user compaired to you. I trade out my phone every 6 to 12 months. I buy used off of Ebay (let the inital price to down).

Suggestion

In your case I would suggest Verison.

Verison has a great client software that installs on your local PC and sits dormant. When your PC gets email It wakes up and transmits out to your phone the new email. If you reply to that email via phone it just like you were at your desk.

You need to leave your computer on, and I suggest HIgh speed internet at home.

The other option you have is to create a web mail account that is tied to your phone. Something like Steve@cingular.blackberry.com. It is an option you can pay for in your monthly service plan.

You then call your ISP email account COX and set up a "copy fowarding" feature. Every email that is sent to you gets copyed and a duplicate is sent to Steve@cingular.blackberry.com.

so when you delete from your phone the orignal email is still at your cox account.

THe last option (and its getting harder to find) is using a phone carrier that supports POP3. NOt many do any more.

so you are "poping" from your phone and your home computer.

I hope this helps.

cheers

chad

Wow, good stuff Chad. Tanks man. :thumbs

A friend at work has Alltel with the PDA that looks like the one in the pic you sent, and he's very happy with it. Says he only pays $7 mo. for unlimited internet.

Thanks, I think you've narrowed the options for me. I'll check out Alltel and Verizon. :thumbs

As for your clutch, you may have just glazed it. Try driving it and see. If it seems to be holding under acceleration, try a reasonably hard launch. It will either slip or burn the glaze off and you'll know if you need a clutch or not. The stock clutch/pp are pretty good for stock HP - it's the hydraulic slave that sucks.

I have the same 6700 phone on Verizon.. Its a nice PDA but as far as the phone it sux. The ear piece is no loud enough and its a pain to dial with the touch screen. It does internet and email real nice though...

I do recommend Verizon I have 6 phones with them right now and the quality it great, other than the phone problems i mentioned....

I use a Treo with Verizon service. I love the phone because there isn't much I can't do with it. Phone,PDA, Internet, Email, Text and it actually has a surprisingly good camera. I can't speak for the plan since the bank pays the bill. Kim has a basic phone with Verizon and neither of us has had an area where we couldn't get service. I admit we don't really frequent the fringes of the valley though.

My son who's the federal agent carries a Treo too. I don't know all the reasons but he too chose the Palm version over the Windows version. Had something to do with receiving email.

Steve, I have an extra 6700 sitting in my desk drawer There is a thread on in in the for sale section.

FWIW, this phone never rebooted by itself... not once.

Steve

Edit: This phone was used on alltel service. I used to work in cellular (sales) and have tried many different services. Whatever you decide, I recommend Alltel.

For me.. the choice was easy... after having verizon and sprint and dropping calls I am now on T-mobile. I never drop a call now. The girlfriend is on Cingular and cant keep a signal to save her life.

I had a cell phone similar to that one Dwayne, but it was rather cumbersome to carry around along with the battery pack that also doubled as a jumper battery for the vette. The biggest drawback was always looking for change to use it...:smilelol
