Wel i have a post asking for a good tuner....one reason is my 1971 BB with no factory emission equipment failed at idle and at RPM load.....imagine that...huh? A car with no emissions controlls failing emissions what a surprise. I learned that its going to be a very long time before the Bill 2357 will be enacted if EVER! This is a bunch of crap and it shows just how stupid out local government actually is. I got off the phone with the our friendly state emissions oficer today only to be told to dump money into needless "repairs" pay for them to test again pay for a waiver and then IF I dont fail by 2X they will "grant" me a waiver for a year. Else they will deny me. All for a car I drive maybe 1000 miles a year as I have been restoring it and still work way more than drive. While I understand that driving is a privledge I recognize that our state governement is more fouled up and an polutes way more than our collectible cars as they stink something aufull!!!

The emissions test does suck only because the biggest polluter in the valley is Sky Harbor jets. I wonder if they should start to emission the jets. There is no way classic/vintage autos are the ones that make the valley sky BROWN day in and day out.

Oh well, I'll just tweak my ECM a little more on the lean side and emission it and then fatten it up afterwards.

I too had a 71 BB.

If I recall the only emmessions equipment on the 71 is the PCV running into the air cleaner.

thats it.... If you have that, then make sure the Ignition and carb is up to snuff

I had good luck dropping in an Elderbrock 750Cfm carb, buying the Jet/ meetering rod kit for $35 and spending an afternoon tuning the car by My nose.

If you want to go that route host up a corvette saturday and we will show up to help.

here are some pictuers of the said 71'

Digital Disaster

Two words: Denatured Alcohol

I suggest 1 gal added to approx 5 - 6 gals fuel.

Get it at any Home Depot, Leows. This will get a fairly "dirty" engine through by itself.

If worse comes to worse, combine with the cheapest cats you can find (there's some really cheap ones out there), bolt them on, and make up replacement pipes to bolt in place after you sail through emissions.

BTW, registering outside Maricopa County only works for a while, they will catch it (been there , done that).

I passed merely by leaning out the carb. Then turned it back after the test. My buddy did the same thing.

Yassir .. preachin to the choir.

I have hated the whole 'emissions' thing since it began.

*Cars* have never been the major component that causes pollution in metro areas..

I read a bit of the history of the LA valley area for a paper I did in college way back when ..before cars were our main mode of transport LA had brown air days ..always been industry processes responsible.

Granted .. cars add some percentage .. nowhere near the major contributors that politicians would have us beleive.

If methanol production ever gets cost effective as a replacement .. they will have to find another scapegoat to harass into the ground.. as the only byproduct of burnin Alky water vapor. So cars would be *cleaning* the air as it passes thru the motor.

Grrr.. don't get me started.

Thanks for the offer Chadc I am trying to keep the car with all the original equipment. To change out the carb or add cats just is not possible for me. I am however looking for a good shop that can tune my car on a dyno. If anyone knows a good place or can comment on ADS in Tempe I would be gratefull.

Thanks,

Ron

That seems like a lot of Denatured Alcohol, but I don't know. I have never used it before but am tempted to use it in the 442 to get it through this week. I was thinking one gallon to a full tank (16 Gal) of gas....

I used acetone to get my wife's Buick through. To make a VERY long story short, I failed four attempts - each time performing some repair that was supposed to make it pass. Finally, out of options, I tried acetone like a friend recommended. That was the only change from the previous attempt, and it went from just barely failing, to passing with flying colors. Can't guarantee it, but it definitely worked for me!

On the out-of-county registrations; I have had all three of my hobby cars registered in Navajo County for five years - never had a problem. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can comment on the actual law, but I tried to look up the restrictions around emissions testing and it looked like you could have a car in Maricopa County that was registered in another county, as long as you did not drive it to work or to college. I printed out the ARS section and carried it in the cars, just in case.

I took the 442 in and it passed with flying colors. Cleaner then the 04 GTO.... Go figure.

In 1969 I had a 1968 442 that was my first drag car. Not much gave me problem back then except for the hemi's. Man I was so in love with that car. Had to screw my slicks to the rims to keep from spinning them off. :thumbs

Damn, someone else that found out that the airport is a gross polluter too. As more flights are added, the cars will be squeezed on some more.

Why can't you find some E85 and mix it? I have seen it here in Tucson. I am going to play with it in the Scout and turn the boost up some more. Have to burn more of it, but more power too. It should really help keep the engine to run cooler also under higher boost.

I do not want to hear that Bill 2357 is not ever going to be enacted.......I was counting on that Bill to go through so I could put either headers and dual exhaust or go with side pipes on my '81. The thought of putting the stock system back on..... :banghead .....

  • 3 weeks later...

:D

I just came back from MVD with my new Tag. Nope, no emissions test required. All I had to show was my insurance policy. I was prepared to argue, get ticked off and such.

Took me 15 minutes in & out.
