Purchase of out of state vehicle

🇺🇸Well it looks like Annie has finally had enough dealing with the public at Fry's for 47.5 years.  She has started the process of pulling the plug.  We have decided a new hotrod to celebrate is in order.  We have found one on the national forum in Florida that strikes her fancy.  We might have it transported to here or maybe to TN where we will be in October and she could drive it back.

Anyways, I am totally lacking in knowledge in purchasing an out of state vehicle.  Maybe no big deal, but any wisdom from members here would be truly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and any info given.  Links to pics added.

Wowzer, that appears to be properly built, good luck

I can't advise on the sale procedure, I know a few on here have done out-of-state so they'll chime in I'm sure.  I think for peace of mind to find someone on the Big Board to take a look at the car or if they're familiar with the car, to vouch for it.  Just so you don't waste a trip over and have better confidence with the big drive over

Good luck, we'll be looking forward to seeing it.  If there's a link to a website or something, post it up; we like to look

I would do the transaction at Florida’s version of MVD.  You will have to go there anyway or do it by email to buy a trip permit to drive it back.

At least the Florida MVD could also check for any loans or mechanic liens  that might be on the vehicle.
That long of a drive would definitely find any gremlins that the car might have.

I agree with everything stated.  If we were going to Florida, I would do exactly what you say.  But TN is as Far East this fall as we are going.  I know vehicles are bought from out of state every day.  Just haven't ever been through the process.

Consider a friend/forum member to personally check it out and look at the title.  Any local mechanic shop there could do a quick 18-25+ item check- compression, brakes, coolant leak, battery, etc

Assuming the title is free and clear, get a bill of sale  notarized, have your bank wire to his account the sum.

Your insurance should cover a new purchase for 30 days before it has to be included in policy

Agree that you can store the car in his garage until you arrange transport within x days

Rather than wait for October, I'd pay to get it trailered here and enjoy.

Once here you can go down to MVD wait 100 years and get the new plates and title.

I bought my first vette in Las Vegas and I made the stupid mistake of paying NV sales taxes instead of AZ as the NV sales taxes were more than what they would have been here. Do yourself a favor and check the sales taxes to ensure you don't overpay.

FYI - if you title a vehicle in Arizona with no lien, and you want a paper copy of your title, you must specifically request it at the time you transfer the vehicle into your name. They no longer automatically issue a title. I just ran into this with the motorcycle I bought. Paid cash, registration and plate came, no title document. Around and around with MVD and the dealer. This is a new process that MVD recently implemented, but the communication with third parties has been very poor and, in typical Arizona government fashion, they implemented a new process without having all of the necessary supporting infrastructure in place. There is no place on the current title documentation to indicate that a paper title is desired. MVD informed my dealer that they should have put a "sticky note" on the title docs to indicate the buyer wanted a paper title document. WTF?!

Last time I bought a car out of state was way back in 2007, so I'm not sure if any of that would still apply here. I did get hosed by both states with the sales tax for some reason though. I licensed it in Nebraska for a year until I could get the car down here. It took me 4 months after I bought it to be able to get up there and drive it back, plus it left a car there for when we visited family and we had a cool car to drive. Then when I went to get the license plate for AZ after getting it down here, they also charged me for the sales tax. I tried like crazy to argue with them that I'd already paid it but they wouldn't have any of that. I had to pay it to get the plate. But it was cheaper then the Nebraska price. I'd also get someone in Florida to look at it for you and then have it shipped if it turns out to be the one. Good luck with it all.

Forgot to mention, Congrats on the retirement. Southwest offered a good early retirement package but it was just a couple years to soon for me to jump on it.

Vette R & D

Ok.  I have bought 3 vehicles out of state.  Yes all 3 were corvettes.  The most recent purchase was just over 1 year ago a 2017 Grand Sport.   It was from a GM Dealer and the Vette was still under factory warranty and GM Certified which gave  12/12  bumper to bumper warranty including the first oil change for free.  But,  I still had the sale person send me more pictures and the original window sticker.   I felt comfortable on the quality of the Vette.  Here is how it was structured.  If you buy a vehicle out of state and you are a resident of Arizona and are titling, licensing in Arizona you will pay AZ sales tax knowing that and needing to wire money to Pennsylvania I went through my credit union and they process all the paper work here in AZ and the dealer collected no taxes but I believe they charged me for a transport/3 day permit.  I think it was bull but I didn't want to argue over a small fee I think it $25.00.  I didn't want to miss the pick-up date for the Vette.  I had decided that because of the weather conditions and distance I would have it shipped in an enclosed carrier.  That was $1500 to have it shipped.  But plain tickets, food, lodging for Deb and me would have been more, plus I didn't want to put the miles on it.  Well did it all go smooth? Nope. The wired funds somewhere got hung up and the driver showed up right on time to pick-up the Vette,  Dealer would not release because he could not verify the funds in his account,  Driver left with out the Vette,  Now we were trying to get the Vette here in time for the 2019 Fathers Day Picnic- Drive. It was the Monday before the drive, the last possible day to get it here on time.  Four hours latter the dealers ready to release the car.  I contact the shipping company they agree to turn around for a $500 fee and the deal is made.  The dealer agreed pay me $750 of my shipping cost because the wire went out late because of their mistakes and that was going to cover the turnaround fee.  The Driver lost over 8 hours of road time but managed to go to Tennessee pick-up 2 secrete Audi's head to AZ also and make our delivery late 9:00PM Friday the night before our club event was great.  The Audi's were test vehicles and had to deliver first because of security issues.  He had to have them in Casa Grande Area proving grounds by 5:00pm.  By the way I gave the extra $250 to the driver and the Vette exceeded our expatiations

So yes I told the whole story that you didn't need but the older we get the more stories we tell, congrats on retirement I cant wait for mine!

One side note,  If you are a veteran the may be discounts my son in law just retired out last year.

One more posting:  It seems you are buying from an individual, not a dealer.  If so there is no sales tax.  I've bought my last 2 Vettes from out of state. No sales tax on either one as I bought from an individual.
