Harmonic Damper

Recommended Posts

Oh the joys... have a leaking steering rack, so its getting rebuilt, but since everything is out anyway, planning on replacing the harmonic damper. Does anyone have any experience with these? The big boards and many many other forums show ATI and Fluidampr seem to lead the pack. No forced induction, no under-drive stuff necessary. LS1 stock crankshaft. Thanks for the input.

Throw an ATI on it and don't worry about it failing later on.

The only thing I worry about is rebuilding it...I don't want to have to pull everything out again. I'd like to install and forget about for another 100,000 miles and some hard use. Since the crankshaft is not keyed, some sealant needs to be shoved in the keyway in the ATI damper to prevent oil from leaking out, right?

Following. I'm in a 2011 GS and interested in hearing your (@joe@cpr.com's) opinion on ATI vs. Powerbond vs. OEM vs. others, Etc.  Especially for the money, longevity, and keeping relatively stock, what's does anyone think? I understand what serious builds require, but what about the average Joe, or Ben, or Chad?

I would only run an ati, innovators west, or fluidampner. On a car like an fbody, 5th gen, etc where the balancer is crazy easy to replace keeping it oem on a simple setup isn't a big deal but on a vette I would replace it. To respond to the 100k hard use lasting, it's not reasonable to expect things to last 100k if you are beating the snout out of it.

I'm only at 155K miles now and still beating on it with abandon. If it starts to wobble or if the water pump shows signs of failure, I'll consider swapping to a Powerbond HB. Otherwise the OEM will stay on.

Went with an ATI, all steel construction. Aluminum shaves some weight, but talking with the ATI rep; stated the AL is used most often in circle track and drag racing applications. There sure is a wieght difference between stock and ATI.

Bought a small Lisle three jaw puller with four rods, ended up using the longest at ~7.2" and it slid right off. Replaced front main seal while I was at it due to leakage. Will be installing the ATI in a few days, then wait for the steering rack to come back. I'll post pictures in a separate post.
