Anyone use the high torque starters ?

I've got an OEM starter that is starting to show weak cranking issues when the engine gets hot....header heat is probably causing it's demise. If I replace it, I'm thinking of using an aftermarket high torque unit along with the various heat shielding mods. Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with these units ?

I had an issue with starters with my headers heating up the starter and would toast a new starter in no time, then I got a mini high torque from Powermaster. Works like a champ and have not had any issues with starter ever since and that was 4 years ago. I did try everything like heat shields, wraps etc... nothing worked until the starter replacement. Jus sayin, but it is a LS8 CF. :pirate:

This is good info as Julie is experiencing the same problem and has had 3 new starters installed in the last year.

Yep! I went through two brand new starters, not rebuilds in only a few months. The heat ate them up. Mini high torques are good starters.

Teh only drawback to them is on repeated starts in a very short period of time, or an extended crank. Even then, teh only thing that dies on them are teh copper contacts.

Tried too...couldn't get one that would engage the flywheel. Had to stick with OEM, but my custom 1/8" perf aluminum heat shield turned out to be a winner!

No problems since.

Now how can that be? We had teh same engines-same as my Z/28 too?

40k miles on my car, headers since 18k, no issues at all. No heat shielding. Strange how some have the issue and others don't. If mine goes out, I'll just do a 5.3L truck starter as it is slightly smaller, but stay with OEM starters.

This problem would go away if she just stopped starting it! You people!!!! :at wits end:

No, she needs to start it on a regular basis as the neighbors just love to be awakened in the morning to the sound of her car.

I use a 99 chevy van starter on my 408. Works great, has a gear reduction starter sound when cranking.

Starters need a lot of energy to work when real hot. Great grounds and power is critical. Most people overlook the basics when it comes to starter heat soak.

Does the GM 5.3 have the nuts to crank the big engine ?

The APS, DKT, and all the twin kits need to use a 5.3 start for clearance, and have had no issue.

Like others said, I would double check grounds and power to it, clean the connections, and make sure that is all good.

No, mine is a PowerMaster. BTW...if your battery is weak even a high torque won't crank a CF motor. LOL
