Devil’s Highway- May 11th - 12th

On May 11th and 12th I am going to go run the Devil's Highway. :devil If you are not familiar with this road, it is the old US 666 (now Highway 191) also known as the "Coronado Trail." It runs between Alpine and Clifton, and is about 90 miles of some of the most technical driving available in this state. This is NOT a high-speed drive, but if you enjoy twisty two-lanes, off-camber corners and spectacular scenery, this is a great road.

I am leaving mid-morning on the 11th and driving to Springerville/Eagar for the night. The 12th I'll run the highway, and hope to make it home that night. This is about a 600 mile trip, split 250/350 between the two days.

The route is a loop, Phoenix/Payson/Heber/Show Low/Springerville/Alpine/Clifton/Safford/Phoenix.

Anyone who wants to join me is welcome to come along; post up here if you're interested.

PHOENIX MEET POINT/TIME:

Chevron station, southeast corner of Beeline (Hwy 87) and Ft. McDowell Road.

This is the second traffic light north of the intersection of Beeline and Shea Blvd (approximately 2 miles).

Turn right off Beeline, and an immediate right into the Chevron.

Drive through the fuel islands, and bear left into the parking lot on the side of the building.

Food, drinks, fuel, restrooms available.

9:30 meetup for a prompt 10:00 a.m. departure.

PRESCOTT FOLKS MEETUP POINT/TIME:

Meet in Payson.

Parking lot, southeast corner of Hwy 87 and Hwy 260, south side of McDonalds.

11:00ish meet time for an 11:30ish departure.

We'll figure out what's for lunch and when, once we are all together in Payson. If you have suggestions, bring them!

If anyone wants to exchange cell numbers, please PM me.

We've always talked about doing this run, but no one ever set a date until now... :thumbs can I offer a couple of suggestions? Stay at Honda casino south of Pinetop/Lakeside, way better hotel and it's up in the pines instead of out on the flats where Springerville is. The drive from Honda to Springerville is beautiful too... Go the other way, longer trip up to the motel for a good nights sleep and uphill might be more fun with less brake wear. We may be in, let me talk the boss into it!

When I first started thinking about this, my original thought was to stop at the Casino for the night, but that location was not the best for the drive itself. Stopping for the night in Pinetop/Lakeside makes the trip too lopsided for distance going down the hill.

I decided against going up the hill, because going uphill means either:

1) Driving the twisties at the end of a driving day (already driving 5+ hours before you even get there), which I don't want to do;

OR

2) Staying overnight at the south end, to head out in the morning. But, that means staying in Clifton/Morenci. NOT nice places to spend the night. . .YUCK!

I'm staying at the Best Western in Eager on the 27th. http://bestwesternarizona.com/hotels/best-western-sunrise-inn

I hope you and the boss can make it! :thumbs

Me and a group of the Z06 clique usually make this run as well at the end of April.....leaving Phoenix and going UP the hill thru Morenci/Clifton, then bedding down in Greer for the night. Once we get our plan down for our trip, I can let you know and if you get no takers on your event, you can come join us :thumbs We definetly don't take 5 hours to reach Moreci......think something like our ride home from lunch at the Yard House a couple weeks ago :edward::rockon2:

I could be in. Maybe. I'd need to call the lodge at Hannagan Meadow and ADOT to verify the road is free of snow and dry from runoff before I'd leave Phoenix. April is kinda early to avoid bad weather at that elevation. 2 years ago I went uphill in July. Stayed in Safford (lots better than Morenci/Clifton) the first night, but it gave us extra time to eat lunch and goof around in Globe/Miami and again in Safford before dinner. The only issue was the occasional overheating due to no tranny cooler with my 3200 stall converter. Going downhill will obviously be hard on brakes, but really great on gas mileage.

I've made part of this run a couple times...years ago...on bikes. We did all 600+ miles in one day though. :edward: It was a blast. I'd like to do it, but I'm not up for an over nighter though.

I've done this run twice on a bike, once each direction. This will be my first time in a car. . .

If your trip is on a ship, I've heard that it's a good idea to arrive a little early to avoid missing the boat.

Love this drive. It was a blast with the Z06 guys two years ago. I want to do it again but the stupid Evo is a E85 car ans changing everything is just not in my plans.

I might make that run with you if I don't go racing at INDE. I've done it several times by motorcycle, once in a Cobra, and the last time in the Viper with the Velocity Vettes group. I like to stay at Hannagan Meadow south of Alpine. On the last trip we stayed an extra night and took a loop cruise the second day down 666, east on AZ78 into New Mexico, north on US-180 to Luna, and west back to Alpine. Beautiful scenery and endlessly challenging switchbacks. I'm anxious to get back and visit my wolves and see how the area is recovering from the fires.

Thread #9 above says "Dates changed" but doesn't list any new dates:yeah:

If you read all the posts prior to #9 (and decipher it) you'll see the original dates were April 27, 28.

Hello all, new memeber here. My wife and I will be moving into our new home on 4/17 and hope we get our new GS by the end of April. We were talking about doing this route before we saw the topic in here. Do allow interlopers go go along?

Aloha Donna My brother and I and maybe couple of other cars are interested in going. 2-4 cars total. We are thinking about staying at Hanagan's Meadow Lodge Friday (May 11) and Saturday (May 12) night. We have stayed up there the last two times we went up there to drive Devil's Highway and had a blast. I would be interested in comparing your room rates at the location you picked. We all live up in Prescott so maybe we can meet you in Payson if that's the way you are going on the way up.
