Oh ya, go to Denver in December

No, it'll be COLD. All the way cold.

Wind chill was supposedly good for -7 degrees. I fought this crap for 2 days, got stuck where I didnt want to be 2 nights in a row... And when I finally made it out of Colorado and thought I was home free...

The wind showed up. Causing a whiteout for three hours, closing the interstate. My best guess was 75-80 mph winds. The closest town that I saw on the news recorded 65 mph, but I was on the open plains in northern NM where nothing impeded the wind. The wind was so strong that at one point it moved my trailer sideways while I was sitting still. I started to worry that the truck and trailer would be blown over.

This is where I sat for three hours, and all of the awesome landscape I got to see. This picture does no justice to the ferocity of the wind and the complete lack of visibility.

So I sat for three hours waiting for the wind and blowing snow to clear. Once it did, I was able to make it another 40 miles to Las Vegas, NM, where I am now. Pissed off. I was supposed to be home by now. The roads are still frozen solid with ice, and I have to try to drive through the mountains north of Santa Fe tomorrow morning.

This is what the road looked like all 40 miles. Please note the 2 inch thick solid layer of ice on the road below the blowing snow. 35 mph in this wasn't spooky, it was flat out scary. There were a handful of times that the truck got far enough out of shape that I thought I was gonna eat it. I was in my Dodge Dually with an empty 30' enclosed trailer behind me. That means that the trailer didn't have the weight to anchor me, but had all the surface area to act as a sail pushing the truck all over the damn place in the wind.

This guy (it was a girl actually) wasn't so lucky. The road was littered with scenes like this.

This oughta about seal the deal on any more deliveries to Denver in December. My contact in Denver when I asked her "Is it snowing"? said "No". I wonder now what the hell she thought I meant.

Everyone cross your fingers that I make it home tomorrow.

Another day is not a big deal as long as you arrive safe. Don't push it, especially with that big wind sail you are pulling. And invest in good chains all around!

Ok, since everyone else has told you to be safe and hopes you get home... ...all you gotta do is sit in that trailer and it will have plenty of weight to anchor it down. :smilelol Just need someone to drive after that. :thumbs

been there done that, shaved years off of my life because of it. THAT is why i live in AZ. look at the bright side, If you wreck and the truck starts on fire. .. then you will be warm. if it takes an extra day to get home. So be it. "Get-home-itus" kills many people

Well, I think I should make it. Gonna saddle up again and try to make it through the mountains to Santa Fe. Once I'm there, I should be home free....

DUDE - FIND A HOME DEPOT OR LOWES! Buy a pallet full of play sand in the bags - they'll use the fork lift to load it in - save your reciept and then return it when you get back. It'll keep that trailer from trying to turn you into a hang glider. Had a buddy in Oregon used to do that every winter, had them load a pallet in his pickup in late october. He'd cover it up real good with a tarp and drive around with it for 3 months then go back and return it. Good luck!

Hey man....keep it between the lines...if you can see the lines! If not, keep it between the ditches! Make it home safely!

We got screwed by that wind too, up north...sure aint fun, is it? Wind damage at my restaurant and just about everywhere up there. Got a hotel room, wind blew out power, had no heat, lights, and even worse, no TV. And how bout the guy hunting elk? Tree lands on his tent and kills him? Note to self....dont hang around trees when it's real windy!

Driving in the snow sux, driving in the snow with ice under that sux even more. Now add in the wind and chill factor to top everything off. Sounds just like when I lived in NH for six years...I hated the winters. Take it easy and be safe.

Glad you're safe and sound BP. Reminds me of the crap we drive through more often then not. It's always better to keep a full tank, the window open a bit and just pull over and wait it out. Also hoping no dumb ass rear ends you while you're parked. Glad you made it!!!!!!

Chris, I was coming home from Michigan and hit the same stuff! We were in New mexico at the same time, saw 6 semis turned over in New Mexico and 1 in Flagstaff. At least I was only pulling a flatbed trailer, glad you got home safe.
