Are Radar Detectors worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hello!  I live in Peoria.  I was wondering if Radar Detectors are worth it in Arizona.  The one that I was looking at was the new Uniden R3.  I do mainly city driving.  I am wondering what kind of Radar/laser police use and which they primarily use.  I don't speed regular it be just for those times I get distracted.

If this is in the wrong spot please let me know and I'll move it asap.

Thanks

Lasers are used throughout the state.  I see them a lot in Gilbert.  But there is very little scatter so if it goes off and they had aimed it at you, all you can do is coast and pray.  Officers have to be stationary to effectively use it.

Radar is usually the K2 band but some cities still have the old X band in use.  With an X band setting you'll get a lot of false positives - mainly from door sensors from commercial businesses.

I use Passport 9500 (older style) with GPS to note when I am approaching fixed photo radar spots, which would require a subscription to stay up to date.

On road trips I also use WAZE on the iPhone.  It is generally accurate but for some reason people love to report disabled vehicles on the side of the road!

The Passport has probably alerted and saved me at least twice on each road trip to San Diego.

Thank you!  Overall do you recommend a detector for mainly city driving?

I never go out without one!  There is value with the photo radar reminders and I generally hear a valid alert once a week while driving a minimal amount around town.

There are several ways to power and mount it so it is not too blatant.  Some will swear by the Valentine but I have been happy with a Escort

Not a ton of radar gets run on surface streets. I rarely pick anything up with mine there. On the highway or open areas just outside of town, its well worth it to me.

Are you saying more laser is used on surface streets?

What detectors do you run if you haven't stated them already.

I just started using Waze last week on the 1,500 mile trip to Detroit.   Nice additional aid in knowing where the police might be looking for you.  Of course it does nothing for the undercover vehicles rolling with you.

I have Valentines in all my vehicles and I won't leave home without them.  They definitely help keep me honest.

I got a lot of false signals with my V1 due to cars all having some sort of radar now.  I only run it on road trips now.  Are yours newer or something?  Not sure what all these vehicle radar systems are going to do to the detector industry.

I had to buy a new V1 to get rid of all the false alerts.  My other one was ancient, though, so it may or may not help in your case.

I get a lot of false signals but I've learned to know which ones I really need to pay attention too.

Mine if it is connected to my phone I can tell it to not pick up blind spot radar signals . Also will learn banks, stop lights , etc and fixed radar like they have in PV . I guess it has the ability to learn ?

I've only ever gotten one laser alert that wasn't the sun coming through the windshield at the right angle to set it off. Beside, if you get popped by laser, it's too late anyway.

That's what my main concern was.  I don't want to spend money for a nice radar detector just to get shot with laser all the time.

I've only experienced laser Used by state police. Small towns don't have the money for laser.

I live in northern Peoria.  Should I expect much laser?

Thanks for all the quick and helpful responses.  I appreciate it!
