CANCELLED - AUG - Escape the Heat - Saturday, August 19th CANCELLED

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this run is not possible due to road conditions.

Yesterday I had to go to Flagstaff, so I drove the cruise route to get there.  I discovered there is major construction in progress on Lake Mary Road between Happy Jack and Flagstaff.  There are 7 MILES of dirt/gravel/rocks where the pavement has been completely removed.  In numerous places the rocks/gravel between the wheel ruts was so deep my Vette was bottoming out and scraping.  I crept through there at 10-15 miles an hour, but I have damage to the splitter and I need to put the Vette up on a lift to see what kind of damage I may have done to the undercarriage.

Sadly, there are no good alternatives.  I-17 northbound on Saturdays right now sucks with heavy traffic, and is a boring drive at best.  Detouring off Hwy 87 from Payson down Hwy 260 to Camp Verde puts us right back on I-17 heavy northbound traffic, and into Flagstaff at least an hour later, right in the middle of lunch hour when the Brewery is very busy.   Their parking lot is iffy at best, and at lunchtime there is no way a group of us will even find parking, much less be able to eat lunch together.

So, this is a bust.  I will try to do it again next year – at least Lake Mary Road should have good pavement then. . .

Spend a day out of the heat. . . :devil10:

Saturday August 19th, cruise to Flagstaff via the back roads. :driving:

Route: Payson/Strawberry/Happy Jack/Flagstaff.

Lunch at Beaver Street Brewery:
http://www.beaverstreetbrewery.com/  :eat:

The Brewery opens at 11:00. They DO NOT take reservations, even for large groups. So, the plan is to be there when they open the doors at 11:00. . .

Back into the blast furnace via I-17.

8:00 a.m. meet for a prompt 8:30 a.m. departure.

MEET POINT:

Chevron gas station, southeast corner of Beeline (Hwy 87) and Ft. McDowell Road.
This is the second traffic light north of the intersection of Beeline and Shea Blvd (approximately 2 miles).

Turn right off Beeline, and an immediate right into the Chevron.
Drive through the fuel islands, and bear left into the parking lot on the side of the building.
Food, drinks, fuel, restrooms available.

Route and itinerary will be provided at the meet point.

Post up here if you’re in!

I drove back south on your return route about 2 months ago, and there were long delays, long stretches of construction, and long stretches of dirt road in both lanes on the way.

Might want to check on that.

Needing a Viagra refill does not constitute a medical hang up.:smilelol:smilelol

I removed the suggested return route through Sedona. No one has ever used that route coming home, and right now it's under construction. Also, on the weekend it is generally bumper-to-bumper traffic, and so not really a good way to come back home.

Thanks.  I wasn't certain which segment you cut.  Christine & I drove the AZ-87 to Winslow, I-40 to Flagstaff, and I-17 to Phoenix loop last week and the only construction we encountered was chip sealing on 87 north of the Happy Jack turn-off.

Would love to participate but I've got meetings to attend that day.  Have fun!

I might be able to make this one. I'm in Prescott Valley. Is there somewhere that I can meet up with you guys on your way up?

thanks,

Absolutely!

From Prescott Valley, Hwy 69  to Hwy 169 to I-17 north to Camp Verde.  There you pick up Hwy 260 East.  Hwy 260 runs right into Hwy 87, which is our route north at that point.

From the 260/87 junction, you have options. . .

1.  Wait at the 260/87 junction (there is a big wide spot on the northbound side of Hwy 87) and join us as we zoom by;

2.  Go south on 87 approximately 22 miles into Payson; the group will be making a rest stop there;

3.  Go south on 87 to Strawberry (5 miles) or Pine (8 miles) and join us as we zoom by.

Hwy 87 between 260 and Payson has some nice twisties and scenery. :scareddriver:

If you are going to participate for sure, please send me a PM.  We can exchange cell numbers and I can share more details with you before the cruise.

Hope you can make it!  :ACE:

Donna,

I'll be returning from the Bonneville Speed Week by the way of central Utah on the 18th. If there's a portion of your route you'd like me to check out for possible problems, I'll be happy to give you the last minute updates. I'd love to go with you, but my passenger has to catch a flight home to FL on Saturday.

BTW, if Cu4L8R brings you the taillights you're buying, just send me the $20 instead. It'll be a shortcut for the $20 dashmat he bought from me in 2011 and can't seem to find me to pay for it. :lol

Tom, tell your passenger to call Uber.:lol

Thanks for the route offer. The only  portion of the route I am concerned about is the stretch of Lake Mary Road through Happy Jack between Flagstaff and the 260 Junction. However, I know that is out of route for you coming home from Utah. Unless you want to detour through Payson for the better scenery. . .

Regarding the taillights, I am apparently not buying them. I never received a response to my inquiry, but later there was a post that the parts were all gone.  Additionally,  Although I understand you wish to be paid money that is owed you, I would not want to get in the middle of that unless you and Andrew were in agreement that the money should go to you. . .

If we get a rainout at Bonneville, I'll have lots of time to kill, so my Utah trip will spill over into AZ. I avoid Interstates as a general rule, so any backroad is usually a plus. I'll keep it in mind and let you know on the 18th, if I went sidetripping.

I was just kidding about you being the $20 middleman ('er middlewoman) to give him some grief. It's why I ended it with a :lol
