I was on the highway the other day, passing someone, and when I shifted into gear I heard this loud bang, and it felt like something seized up. I notice now at low rpms, there's a vibration, and that when i take my foot off the accelerator while in gear, theres a bit of jerking while decelerating. The rear is only a few months old, and was a replacement for when my car got hit months back. I barely get on the car except to pass or get out into traffic. It shifts fine, but just those two problems persist. What could be wrong?

Try a search over on the big CF forum. There are lots of threads on differential noises....etc like this one

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-tech/25...advice-too.html

Could be a lot of things. I would have it checked out before driving it too much more. Could get very expensive or deadly if something is coming apart.
98 Coupe. Nuthin fancy..It has Blackwing CAI, Corsa Pace car exhaust with X-pipe and hi-flow cats. Ohh and I also got rid of those ugly ass wagon wheels for a set of polished thin spokes.

I had something similar on another car.

the rear diff went bye bye.

The big symptiom is I would hear/feel when I was off the gas or coasting. It would disappear when I was doing any type of mild to heavy accelerating.

good luck. It osunds expensive. :-(

well like i said, the rear is "new" as it was put in the car as part of the accident repair from a few months ago. What im trying to see is if its bad from when they put it in the car, so i can get it covered under the girl's insurance who hit me. There's no whine other than whats normal

get it in the air, take out the diff plug (dont drain it) and wipe some of the fluid on a white paper towel.

"But chad why a white paper towel?"

simple, because white always works harder.

...ok an on that bomb shell Ill go leaving.gif

But the girls insurance won't pay again. They paid for the repair once right??? It's not the girls or the insurance's fault it was not done right. It would be the shop's responsibility that did the install. twocents.gif

If it's only a couple months it damn sure better be. But only way to find out is take it in. Sounds like they really screwed up.

There is no diff cover, the diff would have to come out to be inspected.

A cheap way to hazard a better guess would be to get the car up in the air on safe secure jack stands, and try to re-create the noises/troubles. Have a friend listen to locate the source of the noise. At least that will get you closer to the problem.

That was my first thought. They installed the diff and didn't fill er up with lube.

i forgot to say, that this is on the trans am, not the vette. i'd of thought that a rear end wouldnt last long in the heat and everything if it didnt have fluid. so how can i peek inside? or am i gonna have to make a trip down and see mike at loud pedal?

If you can get the rear end on jack stands and remove the filler plug on the side of the Diff, then stick your pinky in and bend it toward the bottom of the inside of the diff. If you don't get lube all the way around your finger at some level inside the diff you don't have any fluid in there. Fluid should be right at the bottom edge of the inspection plug opening once you removed the plug.

10 bolts don't have a drain plug. You are going to have to remove the diff cover and check for metal bits. I know mike has experience with 10 bolts. Could be the clutches or incorrect fluid/no fluid.

Great suggestion!

Either way you are going to have to take the cover off. My .02
