Granted it's an ADOT report from 2005, but in particular, take a look at page 18, section 2.5, "New Technology: Point to Point" for what is probably going to be what we see coming to our highways and biways.

I've contended since the inception of our system that they designed it with point to point measurement in mind. Why else do you put three cameras measuring the same direction. On the 51 they have one at Bethany, one at Highland and one at Thomas. Perfect for the point to point design.

They don't need RFID, they already have technology to read plates on a stand alone basis. DPS uses it to locate stolen vehicles on the highway.

The system reads plates as the officer drives down the road and runs them through the computer. The officer is notified if they get a hit.
